Position sensitive detectors in proton therapy: online monitoring of the beam position

چکیده
Abstract Spot-scanning is a highly dynamic treatment method in proton therapy, tailored to each tumor shape individually. By superimposing many single spots all three spatial axes, prescribed dose applied the volume. To minimize inhomogeneity across this volume, tight constraints on beam position accuracy apply: for below 1%, longitudinal of order 1 mm necessary, whereas lateral plane, needs be roughly one magnitude better. Longitudinal control achieved through selecting energy; laterally, by two sweeper magnets, allowing changes within milliseconds. Such dynamics and require an online measurement enable maintain high quality assurance. Gantry 2 at Center Proton Therapy PSI operates plane parallel strip ionization chamber purpose as final beamline element before patient. The foil-based detector design optimized in-situ placement axis keeps disturbance minimum. A pitch allows reconstruct Gaussian profile with desired accuracy. These profiles are analyzed (and verified) during spot-by-spot basis, next spot applied, introducing dead time after every spot. Applying 50, 000 introduces challenge data acquisition — processing terms keeping times reasonable. Data pileup long mitigated front-end electronics early-stage processing, without compromising measured position.

Electron emission channeling with position-sensitive detectors
Electron emission channeling allows direct lattice location studies of low doses of radioactive atoms implanted in single crystals. For that purpose the anisotropic emission yield of conversion electrons from the crystal surface is measured, most conveniently by use of position-sensitive detectors. We discuss characteristic features of this method, including quantitative data analysis procedure...

The nuclear line region of the gamma ray spectrum remains one of the most challenging and elusive goals of high energy astrophysics. The scientific objectives are well defined, but require well over a factor of 10 increase in sensitivity compared to present day instruments to be achieved. The most promising approach to achieve this sensitivity and a broad range of scientific objectives is offer...
متن کامل‘‘Detector walk’’ in position-sensitive detectors with biased microchannel plates
The spatial resolution of high-accuracy microchannel plate ~MCP! detectors has reached the values, where the so-called detector walk ~or image blurring! may start to limit any further improvements. Image blurring with gain is studied in detail for detectors incorporating angular-biased MCPs. It was found that the presence of the pore bias at the output MCP results in a variation of the charge f...

Recently the technological linear electron accelerators with the energy up to 10 and 25 MeV and the pulse current up to 1A have been developed and put into operation in the "Accelerator" R&D Production Establishment of the National Science Center, Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology [1]. The zone of the technological object irradiation by the accelerated electrons is created by the magn...
متن کاملIntegrated cooling channels in position-sensitive silicon detectors
We present an approach to construct position-sensitive silicon detectors with an integrated cooling circuit. Tests on samples demonstrate that a very modest liquid flow very effectively cool the devices up to a power dissipation of over 10 W/cm. The liquid flow is found to have a negligible impact on the mechanical performance. A finite-element simulation predicts the cooling performance to an ...
